Oldham & Worth in the West End

Kane Realty Advances New Mixed-Use Project “Oldham & Worth”

Kane Realty announced the construction commencement of Oldham & Worth, Kane Realty’s second mixed-use residential project in the West End neighborhood of Downtown Raleigh. Located at the corner of W. Cabarrus Street and S. West Street and adjacent to the Platform project, Oldham & Worth will feature five stories of upscale apartments, first-class amenities and 4,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space. Taking design inspiration from the lumber company located on the property many decades ago, Oldham & Worth will consist of 252 units ranging from modern studios to spacious multi-bedroom residences. The architectural design, which includes rough-hewn wood accents, board-formed concrete, brick, and exposed steel, seamlessly blends the neighborhood’s historic charm with industrial aesthetics.

Allen McCollum, Director of Development with Kane Realty Corporation, shares insight on the project: “By honoring the site’s history while offering contemporary amenities, we’re creating a distinctive living experience in the heart of the West End. This development is designed to appeal to those who appreciate the neighborhood’s creative spirit and seek the convenience of downtown living without sacrificing comfort or style.”

The re-development of the former Clancy & Theys headquarters with these new mixed-residential projects reinforces the West End as a dynamic and growing destination, complementing the expansion of Downtown Raleigh. The neighborhood’s proximity to the burgeoning area around Dorothea Dix Park, the Warehouse District, and Union Station, as well as its walkability to Raleigh’s Central Business District makes it a highly appealing location.

Bill King of Downtown Raleigh Alliance expressed the following sentiments: “Oldham & Worth marks a significant milestone in the ongoing expansion of Downtown Raleigh, which is experiencing a major population surge, evidenced by the nearly 4,000 residential units completed or underway since 2020. This development adds more much-needed residential density as this area continues to evolve into an urban, walkable neighborhood seamlessly connecting Downtown Raleigh and Raleigh’s own Central Park, Dorothea Dix Park.”

The West End is surrounded by breweries, bakeries and retail establishments and is a short bike ride or stroll to Raleigh’s Central Business District and Dorothea Dix Park—an urban park with over 300 acres to explore. Platform, a contemporary 442-unit apartment community, features a dynamic ground level with small-business-friendly retail spaces and six levels of apartments, all surrounding an integrated parking deck. Pedestrian entrances on both W. Cabarrus St. and Dupont Circle lead to a large central plaza and courtyard, providing an outdoor gathering space for residents and retail patrons. Developed by Kane Realty, Platform opened in phases and was completed in 2024. For more information on Platform, visit platformraleigh.com. RoveIQ

North Hills: A Dynamic Mixed-Use Hub Enhanced by Digital Kiosk

North Hills stands as a beacon of modern urban development, embodying the fusion of commerce, residential living, entertainment, and community engagement. Over the years, North Hills has undergone a remarkable transformation from a conventional shopping center into a vibrant mixed-use destination that caters to the diverse needs and preferences of residents and visitors alike.

The evolution of North Hills into a mixed-use property has been characterized by innovative urban planning and a forward-thinking approach to development. What was once primarily a retail hub has now seamlessly integrated residential spaces, office buildings, hotels, dining establishments, entertainment venues, and green spaces, creating a dynamic and interconnected urban environment.

Central to this evolution has been the strategic incorporation of digital technology, particularly through the introduction of digital kiosks and directories throughout the area. These digital innovations serve as more than just informational tools; they are integral components of the North Hills experience, enhancing accessibility, convenience, and engagement for all who frequent the area.

North Hills, owned by Kane Realty, partnered with Awedience Media and RoveIQ to implement an outdoor digital kiosk system throughout the area. From digital wayfinding and interactive maps to event listings, and promotions, these digital kiosks serve as virtual concierges to guide visitors in a seamless and enjoyable manner. In the first four months, over 10,000 user sessions and 50,000 interactions have been recorded.

With four large districts at the property, North Hills’ main focus was the digital directory and wayfinding experience. The user interface design was driven by the need to quickly search a tenant and find a route to a location. For individuals who prefer visual direction or who are aware of their location, the interactive map offers a visual experience.

The option to scan a QR code and send the experience to a smartphone also becomes available once the visitor enables their location on the wayfinding app. This level of accessibility enhances the overall experience and encourages exploration across North Hills throughout the visit.

When visitors and residents aren’t interacting with the screen, the digital kiosk has the ability to rotate digital advertising to generate ancillary revenue. Local businesses can promote their stores and offers as well as national brands. This level of innovation enhances overall marketing and drives high engagement for brands when visitors are ready to shop, dine, and buy. If your brand is interested in advertising on the digital kiosks, contact Awedience Media.

Beyond mere convenience, the integration of digital technology into North Hills underscores its commitment to innovation and sustainability. By reducing the need for traditional paper-based signage and maps, interactive kiosks and digital directories contribute to the area’s eco-friendly initiatives, aligning with broader efforts to create a more environmentally conscious urban environment.

Furthermore, the adoption of digital technology reflects North Hills’ dedication to remaining at the forefront of urban development trends. In an increasingly digital world, the seamless integration of technology into the built environment is essential for staying competitive and meeting the evolving needs of residents, businesses, and visitors.

North Hills stands as a testament to the transformative power of mixed-use development done right. Through strategic urban planning, innovative design, and the thoughtful integration of digital technology, North Hills has emerged as a dynamic and forward-looking destination that sets the standard for modern urban living. As it continues to evolve and grow, North Hills will undoubtedly remain a model of urban innovation, enhancing the quality of life for all who call it home.
